What Meditation Can Teach Us About the Flow of Life

Imagine that you were floating along a river and suddenly stood up; you’d most likely find yourself fighting the natural flow of water and you’d struggle to stay on both feet. In other words, you’d suffer. But what if, instead, you followed the river’s currents? You’d suffer less. Allow me to explain the benefits of flowing with life and how meditation can help you do this. Continue reading

Try This 3-Step Meditation When Fear Takes Over

Did you know that there’s only one fear that has been scientifically proven to be an innate rather than a conditioned response? The fear of heights has been documented to appear in young children. Thus it’s highly likely that all other fears are rooted in conditioned responses. This is good news because it means that when we’re able to reign in our thinking, we can tame our fears. Let me explain how meditation is nature’s fear buster. Continue reading

Regular Mental Detoxing is One of the Most Transformational Experiences You Can Ever Have

If you’ve invested anytime studying health and nutrition, you’ve most likely heard of detoxing. People swear by the health benefits associated with fasting, juice cleanses, colonics, and more. The premise of all these treatments is the same: We’re constantly being presented with unhealthy foods and a polluted environment. When we rid our bodies of toxins, we promote healing. Although this article isn’t about suggesting any particular dietary regimen, what I am advocating is that we regularly detox our minds. Continue reading

Meditation Is Not Like Slamming a Few Beers in Vegas

You’ve arrived home after a long day. Although work is ostensibly done, you still have responsibilities to fulfill: A family to take care of, social obligations to meet, and other items to tick off your to-do list. So finding time to meditate may seem like a luxury that you just can’t afford. Continue reading

Having Relationship Issues With Others? Try Meditation

If we live long enough, most of us will have an experience that tests our ability to trust: Someone we love may hurt us, we may have been abandoned, or even someone’s sudden death can cause us to feel betrayed. I could provide countless additional examples that illustrate times when our capacity to trust is called into question. Regardless of the source of our struggles with trust, at the root of our suffering is attachment. In this post, I’ll explain what it is and how we can transcend it. Continue reading

Medical Doctors Are Finally Prescribing Meditation to Patients

The scientific and medical communities are continually providing evidence that shows the health benefits of meditation. But how many doctors are actually referring their patients to forms of alternative medicine, such as meditation? A May 2011 joint study by the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and the Harvard Medical School shed light on this matter. Continue reading

It’s OK to Grieve. Meditation Can Help Even More.

One of the strongest attachment that I’ve ever had in my life was with my high school sweetheart. After a series of breakups that took place during and after our college years, we finally called it quits once and for all. I remember thinking, “I don’t know if I’ll ever be happy again,” and “Will I ever find anyone else I’ll spend my life with?” For a long time, my heart felt broken. I couldn’t envision anyone being able to replace her. Fortunately, I did move on and I’m currently very happily married and love my wife very much. Nevertheless, it took awhile to break free of the attachment to my ex-girlfriend. Let’s explore attachments and why they cause suffering. Continue reading

Finding Happiness at the Gas Pump

I recently visited my local gas station and handed the attendant a $20 bill. As always, he asked which pump my car was parked next to, and he then activated it from his register. When I finished refueling, I realized that he’d authorized me to pump $30 of gas instead of $20. I quickly headed back to the cashier, explained what had happened, and handed him $10. He looked at me with surprise and thanked me multiple times. My interaction with the cashier inspired me to write about the benefits of being kind, honest, and loving others. Continue reading

Happiness & Suffering: We Always Have The Choice

I was walking along one of the most beautiful beaches in California. Laguna Beach is known as an artistic community with a spectacular coastline. My trusted companion, a yellow lab named Einstein, was with me. As we were taking our stroll, a man was walking toward us. I started moving to the left and he began shifting to the right so that we wouldn’t bump into each other. But the moment our path’s crossed, he abruptly took his shoulder and slammed it against me. Continue reading

2 Simple Steps That Everyone Can Do To Find Peace and Happiness Anywhere

Years ago, I had a client who struggled with being overweight. She felt fat, unattractive, and hopeless. During one of our sessions, she shared something that had happened to her a decade earlier. She and her husband were eating dinner one night, and he made a snide remark about her weight. He immediately apologized and wished that he could have taken it back. But She couldn’t let it go, and she added it to her long list of self-effacing comments about her struggle. Continue reading
