Scented Cleaners Can Make Indoor Air Dirtier Than the Outdoors

A lemon kitchen spray smells like virtue. It is often the opposite. Scented cleaners load indoor air with volatile organic compounds, and EPA’s classic TEAM studies found a dozen common organic pollutants two to five times higher inside homes than outside — rural or industrial, it did not matter. The scent is the product. The lungs are the room.

People spend most of their hours indoors. Outdoor smog gets a weather report. Indoor air gets a candle. Cleaning products, air fresheners, and laundry perfume are designed to linger. That linger is a mix of solvents, terpenes, and a legal black box called “fragrance,” which does not have to name its recipe on the bottle.

Do scented cleaners pollute indoor air?

Yes, in two layers. First they emit what is already in the bottle: alcohols, glycol ethers, and fragrance chemicals. EPA noted that while people use products with organic chemicals, they can drive indoor levels far above background, and the bump can last after the job is done. Second, some of those chemicals keep reacting after you put the spray down.

Terpenes such as limonene — the citrus note in a lot of “lemon fresh” formulas — react with ozone that sneaks indoors. California Air Resources Board–funded work at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that cleaning products containing terpenes produced formaldehyde and ultrafine particles in rooms with elevated ozone. Formaldehyde is not a lifestyle brand. It is a known human carcinogen, and it can show up as a byproduct of a smell you paid for.

Researchers who compare “green” and conventional cleaners have found that plant-oil scents are not a free pass. Some green formulas emit even more monoterpenes. A pine forest is ventilation plus biology. A pine bathroom spray in a sealed apartment is a chemistry set.

Why doesn’t the label list the fragrance chemicals?

Because U.S. cosmetic and cleaner labeling still treats fragrance as a trade secret in many cases. One word can hide a mixture. Anne Steinemann’s work on fragranced consumer products has documented dozens of VOCs from air fresheners, laundry products, and cleaners, including chemicals that never appear on the label. “Unscented” can still contain a masking fragrance. “Natural scent” can still be a terpene bomb.

If a product needs to announce that it smells like a meadow, assume it is volunteering to occupy the air. Dirt comes off with soap, water, vinegar, and a little time. Perfume is a separate product that happens to share the trigger.

How can you clean without wrecking indoor air?

You can open a window so it has somewhere to go.

Simple cleaners still work. Soap, water, vinegar on appropriate surfaces, baking soda for grit, hydrogen peroxide where you actually need a disinfectant, and a microfiber cloth will handle most homes. Skip the fogger, the plug-in, and the “odor eliminator” that is just more perfume. If a surface needs a registered disinfectant, use it, then ventilate. Do not disinfect the coffee table because a commercial taught you fear. Indoor air is the air you actually live in. Stop paying extra to fog it.
