That trusty loofah hanging in your shower might be doing more harm than good. Dermatologists are warning against using natural and synthetic loofahs, citing their tendency to trap moisture, dead skin cells, and bacteria, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold and germs.

“Loofahs can cause tiny microtears in the skin and, if not properly cleaned or replaced often, may introduce bacteria or even mold,” explains Dr. Marisa Garshick, board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology. In other words, while they may feel like they’re getting you clean, they could actually be making things worse.
