More than 5.2 million above-ground pools sold across the U.S. and Canada are being recalled following reports of nine child drowning deaths. The affected models, sold under the brands Bestway, Intex Recreation, and Polygroup, were available at major retailers including Walmart, Target, Lowe’s, Costco, and Amazon from 2002 through 2025.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada issued the joint recall notice, warning that the external compression straps on these pools pose a significant safety risk. The straps can act as footholds, allowing young children to climb and access the water unsupervised. Tragically, nine drowning deaths involving children aged 22 months to 3 years have been reported in the U.S. between 2007 and 2022. No fatalities have been reported in Canada.
All recalled pools are 48 inches or taller and can be identified by specific model and brand names listed on official recall websites. Approximately 5 million units were sold in the U.S., and an additional 266,000 units were sold in Canada.
Consumers are urged to stop using the pools immediately if small children could access them without supervision. Manufacturers are offering free repair kits that include a replacement rope to eliminate the hazardous strap. Until repairs are made, pool owners should either ensure strict supervision or drain the pool entirely to prevent accidents.
This recall serves as a sobering reminder of the hidden dangers associated with common backyard equipment. Regulators emphasize that pool owners should review safety guidelines and inspect their equipment regularly, particularly when young children are present. More information and repair requests can be made through Bestway, Intex, or Polygroup’s customer service websites.
