Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Frozen Sprouted Beans Sold Nationwide

A multi-state Salmonella outbreak has been traced to specific frozen sprouted bean products distributed by Chetak LLC under the Deep brand, according to a July 17 update from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The contaminated products have been recalled following reports of illness across 10 states.

The outbreak, which began in October 2024, has resulted in at least 11 reported cases, with the most recent illness occurring on June 24, 2025. Affected individuals reside in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington.

The FDA identified the source through routine sampling, confirming that Deep-brand frozen Sprouted Mat (Moth) and Sprouted Moong (Mung) beans tested positive for Salmonella. Whole genome sequencing matched the bacteria to the strain responsible for the outbreak.

Recalled products include one-pound (454g) bags with the following lot codes printed on the back:
IN 24330, IN 25072, IN 25108, IN 24353, IN 25171, IN 24297, IN 25058, IN 25078, IN 24291, IN 25107, IN 24354, IN 24292.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause salmonellosis—a gastrointestinal illness marked by diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Symptoms typically develop within 12 to 72 hours of exposure. Most people recover without medical treatment, but young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals face a greater risk of severe illness, and in rare cases, the infection can be fatal.

The FDA advises consumers to check their freezers and discard any affected products immediately. Anyone who has consumed the beans and developed symptoms should contact a healthcare provider.
