How to make Sole salt water and how to take it

  1. Fill a quart-size Mason jar one-third full with unrefined, natural salt.
  2. Fill the jar with filtered water, leaving two inches at the top.
  3. Cover the solution with a plastic (not metal) storage cap.
  4. Shake and let it sit for 24 hours.
  5. Check in 24 hours to see if all salt crystals are dissolved, and add a little more salt.
  6. When the salt no longer dissolves, the Sole is ready.

Store covered on a counter or in a cupboard. The antibacterial and antifungal properties of the Sole will help make it last indefinitely.

Add a half teaspoon of Sole to an 8-oz. glass of filtered water (this can be warm water) each morning, before breakfast. Taste the Sole — if it tastes salty (like you would expect saltwater to taste), then it is the perfect amount for you.

You can find many kinds of unrefined salt in your local store, but check the label, it must say “unrefined” — some sea salts are still refined. Some good types include pink Himalayan salt and Celtic grey sea salt.

    First of all, I agree that retaining all (probably better is “most” because a few maybe somewhat harmful) the minerals in sea salt is a worthwhile goal assuming the sea is an unpolluted one. However a fair amount of what is written here deserves some further thought. For example, I fail to grasp why making up a saturated salt solution and tacking on some sort of New Age title (sole) is any better that adding the amount of salt in that half teaspoon of “sole” directly to the glass of water being consumed. The salt atoms (sodium atoms and chlorine atoms, mainly) will end up in the same kind of atomic environment whether they arrive via sole or just as solid salt on the tip of a teaspoon, as long as the same salt (including the trace minerals) is added to the same water. It is quite unlikely the body can tell the difference.
    The here recommended daily consumption of salt is far in excess of the latest government recommendations for added salt,1.5 grams of sodium per day, compared to the 6.8 grams in a tablespoon of salt (17 grams of salt, not sodium per tablespoon), and here we are told at least 1 tablespoon up to maybe 3 tablespoons. These are 4.5x to nearly 15x what is recommended. To be fair, there are experts who with good reason (studies) believe that the newest recommendations are too low and probably double that, on the order of 3 grams are closer to optimum, but even that is only 1/2 as much as promoted here!
    Then I was surprised to see barium as a nice trace element to come from sea salt. Barium is likely to be called a “heavy metal” and because I could think of no good biological function I did a very limited search. I found nothing positive about its contributions to daily bodily function. In fact, in some compounds it is quite hard to dissolve and thus it is used in X-ray examination because the body just discards it after it has aided the doctor to see anatomical details otherwise invisible or only poorly defined without the help of the barium. In low doses when it is soluble it can cause unhealthy responses and even death. So why is it mentioned as a gift from sea salt? I also wondered about titanium but I leave it to readers to check out this one.
    As an educational matter, maybe some mention of the value of trace minerals is worth adding. To name four, copper, iron and chromium and cobalt. Iron is actually present in the body in considerable amounts but excess consumption makes one seriously sick although we are seriously dependent on it to carry oxygen in our blood. Copper and chromium are toxic and chromium in the wrong form (valence state) causes cancer yet we need these to build enzymes which perform essential functions in our body chemistry. Cobalt is a worse case because we need it badly but the body conserves its compounds very carefully and as little as about 2.5 micrograms of the compounds per day is a sufficient amount because the body tries very hard to conserve its vital supplies (it is sometimes written that we carry a supply sufficient for perhaps 6 years!) However, if we run out we can do damage which can even be irreversible to our nervous systems; the cobalt is a critical part of vitamin B12 (cobalamin) and it serves in building DNA and RNA, production of red blood cells and maintenance of well functioning nerves. Not enough B12 can lead to symptoms similar to MS.
    The point of all that diversion is that sufficiently small amounts of many elements produce little harm and many may be VITAL to bodily function. Barium seems to be in the “OK, we can live with it class” but it is not known (or at least widely known) to be essential.
    Now and then one reads health oriented articles in which there is a tendency toward over-blowing the virtues and with the rather high salt consumption suggested here the amounts may be blown up to the point of being damaging. Caution is advised. As for the trace minerals, the idea is good but maybe a bit misleading.
