If you own a Midea U or U+ Window Air Conditioner, stop what you’re doing and check the model number. Over 1.7 million units in the U.S. and nearly 46,000 in Canada are being recalled immediately due to a serious mold risk that could pose a health hazard.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the design of these popular U-shaped AC units can trap water, making them a prime breeding ground for mold. This mold can release spores into the air, triggering respiratory infections, coughing, allergic reactions, and other health issues.
So far, at least 152 reports of mold have been submitted, with 17 consumers reporting illness, and this number is expected to grow.
Here’s what to look for:
- Midea U and U+ Window Air Conditioners
- Sold between March 2020 and May 2025
- Sizes: 8,000 BTU, 10,000 BTU, or 12,000 BTU
- Purchased at retailers like Costco, Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, and Home Depot
If you own one of these units, act now. Midea is offering:
- A free repair (via technician or DIY kit)
- Or a full refund (with proof of disposal)
