Trump Sends Nuclear Submarines After Fiery Exchange With Russia’s Medvedev

Tensions between Washington and Moscow hit a boiling point after President Donald Trump announced he is deploying two U.S. nuclear submarines in response to what he called “highly provocative” remarks from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said the move was a necessary precaution: “Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.” He warned that “words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences.”

Speaking to reporters later, Trump doubled down, emphasizing the deployment was about safeguarding Americans. “A threat was made… we didn’t think it was appropriate, so I have to be very careful. This is about the safety of our people,” he said.

The flare-up stems from Medvedev’s Thursday post on Telegram referencing Russia’s Cold War-era “Dead Hand” nuclear system, warning Trump to “recall how dangerous” it could be. Trump shot back on Truth Social, calling Medvedev a “failed former President” and warning him to “watch his words.”

The exchange comes as Trump tightens his timeline for Russia to take steps toward ending the war in Ukraine, slashing his original 50-day deadline to just 10–12 days. He’s also floated more sanctions and tariffs and announced plans to send special envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow.

Critics call the escalation risky, but Trump’s supporters argue it shows strength and deterrence. With Medvedev accusing Trump of playing an “ultimatum game,” the showdown underscores just how volatile U.S.-Russia relations remain—and how quickly rhetoric can bring the world to the brink of a new Cold War standoff.
