Close the window, light a candle, and call it a cozy home office. That is not an atmosphere. It is a box of indoor air you will breathe for eight hours, and home office indoor air is often worse than the street you think you escaped.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has said for years that concentrations of many volatile organic compounds are consistently higher indoors than outdoors — often up to ten times higher. The sources are ordinary: paints, cleaners, furnishings, printers, adhesives, and the plug-in scent you bought to feel professional. You did not rent an office with a facilities team. You sealed yourself into a room with a laptop and a scented oil.

Home office indoor air is a product you chose

EPA’s indoor-air pages list the usual suspects: formaldehyde from pressed-wood furniture, solvents from paint and stripper, cleaners, pesticides, copiers and printers, glues, and air fresheners. OSHA’s indoor-air guidance for offices repeats the same chemistry under a different letterhead. These are not exotic industrial leaks. They are the smell of a new desk and a laser printer in a closed spare room.

Ventilation is the part a corporate lease used to handle without asking you. A spare bedroom with the door shut and the HVAC return blocked by a bookcase is a different machine. EPA’s office-occupant guide is blunt about furniture and equipment blocking supply vents and return grilles. If the air cannot move, the compounds stay in the room with you.

Humidity belongs in this conversation. OSHA’s computer-workstation environmental notes keep relative humidity between 30% and 60% and warn that dry air dries the eyes, especially for contact-lens wearers. A winter home office with the heat blasting is a desert with a Slack window.

Printers, candles, and the myth of fresh

A laser printer in a closet is not a boutique. OSHA’s workstation eTool flags chemicals, VOCs, ozone, and particles from computers and peripherals, and it tells you to put emitting equipment in well-ventilated areas and let new gear air out before you install it. That is not a wellness trend. It is industrial hygiene for people who now live at the copier.

Scented products are a choice, not a requirement. If the room only smells like lavender because you poured fragrance into it, you added VOCs on purpose. Open a window. If you cannot, run the bath fan or a real ventilation path, not a perfume.

New furniture off-gasses. So do fresh paint and that foam acoustic panel you hung to sound like a podcast studio. EPA’s advice is boring and correct: source control first, then ventilation. Buy the lowest-emitting materials you can. Do the painting with windows open, then stay out of the room until it stops smelling like a hardware store.

A 20-minute indoor-air audit

  • Find the supply vent and the return. Move the bookcase. If you cannot feel air moving, the room is a jar.
  • Crack a window for a stretch of the workday when weather allows. Cross-breeze beats a candle.
  • Park the printer away from your face, preferably in a more open space. Print in batches, not all day.
  • Retire the plug-in air freshener and the incense. Smell is not the same as clean.
  • Keep humidity out of the desert zone. A simple hygrometer is more useful than another productivity app.
  • If you have a combustion appliance in or near the work room, install a working carbon monoxide alarm. That is not mood lighting.

EPA and NIOSH published building-air guidance for a reason: indoor air is a management problem. In a house, you are the manager. Home office indoor air will not improve because you bought a leafy plant and a Himalayan salt lamp. Plants are fine. They are not an HVAC system.

The health of the founder is the ventilation plan

Headaches, dry eyes, stuffiness, and that afternoon fog you blame on email are sometimes just a stale room. OSHA notes that poorly designed ventilation, stagnant air, and temperatures outside a modest comfort band affect comfort and the ability to work. You do not need a lab coat to take that seriously.

If you share the house with cooking, cleaning sprays, or someone else’s hobby solvents, the office door does not create a cleanroom. Run the range hood when you cook. Store paints and fuels outside the work room. Treat the spare bedroom like a workplace, because that is what it is.

You left the open-plan office to get away from other people’s germs and fluorescent lights. Do not replace them with a sealed box of printer fumes. Open the window. Move the vent. Put the candle back in the closet. Home office indoor air is the cheapest operations upgrade you will make this year.
