President Donald Trump is sounding the alarm over what he claims would be the largest tax hike in American history if the Senate fails to pass his signature “One Big Beautiful Bill.” As Republicans slog through a grueling marathon session packed with amendments and partisan clashes, the stakes couldn’t be higher, at least according to the president.
Taking to social media in the early hours, Trump declared that without the bill, Americans could face a “whopping 68% tax increase,” urging his party to rally around what he calls “the greatest and most important bill of its kind in history.” The legislation promises $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, sweeping rollbacks of green energy incentives, and billions more for border security and military funding.
But inside the Senate chamber, Republican leaders are scrambling to hold their razor-thin majority together. With Senators Thom Tillis and Rand Paul openly opposing the package, GOP leadership can’t afford to lose another single vote. Meanwhile, Democrats are fighting to tack on amendments to blunt the bill’s deep cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, and renewable energy investments.
Adding fuel to the fire, Elon Musk — who recently stepped down from his short-lived post as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — slammed Republicans as the “PORKY PIG PARTY” for pushing provisions that could balloon the national debt by another $5 trillion. Trump fired back on Truth Social, mocking Musk’s reliance on federal subsidies and threatening to unleash DOGE on its former boss.
As the “vote-a-rama” drags into the night, Senate Majority Leader John Thune insists the GOP is determined to reach the “end game.” But with tempers flaring and the clock ticking, the path to Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” is anything but clear.
