What began as a fog-delayed landing at San Francisco International Airport turned into a scene out of a crime drama when federal agents and sheriff’s deputies boarded Delta Flight 2809 and arrested the co-pilot moments after touchdown.
The Boeing 757-300 had just completed its second approach from Minneapolis when, according to passengers, a team of roughly 10 law enforcement officers pushed through the cabin, badges and weapons visible, before “storming the cockpit.” Witnesses reported agents from Homeland Security Investigations and air marshals among the group.
“They cuffed the co-pilot right there and walked him down the aisle,” one first-class passenger told The Chronicle, describing the scene as “shocking and unnerving.” Minutes later, another team returned to collect the pilot’s personal items as stunned travelers watched in silence.
Authorities have not released the co-pilot’s name or the official reason for the arrest, though Homeland Security confirmed it assisted Contra Costa County deputies in executing a warrant. Fox News later cited a federal source alleging the case involves child sexual abuse materials, though officials have yet to confirm that claim.
Delta Air Lines declined to comment, directing inquiries to law enforcement. The remaining pilot reportedly told passengers he was “completely unaware” of what had happened.
The dramatic mid-plane arrest comes just days after another Delta pilot was detained in Amsterdam over a disputed breathalyzer test, adding to scrutiny over the airline’s flight crews.
For passengers aboard Flight 2809, the surreal scene ended quietly as they deplaned with little explanation. “It felt like something you’d see in a movie,” the passenger said. “You don’t expect the cockpit to be stormed at the end of your flight.” The investigation remains active as federal and local authorities withhold further details.
