Wait… Don’t Buy That Discounted Beauty Product

Shopping for beauty products at discount retailers like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross can lead to significant savings, but risks exist. Many products, especially those with active ingredients, can degrade due to improper storage or exposure to air, heat, and light.

What to Look For: Choose products with protective packaging, like opaque bottles and airless pumps, to minimize contamination and degradation. Sealed items are safer but still check for signs of damage, separation of ingredients, or changes in color and texture. If a product is near its expiration date, ensure you can use it before it loses effectiveness or becomes unsafe.

What to Avoid: Be cautious with skincare containing vitamin C, retinoids, and sunscreens, as these ingredients break down easily. Avoid products in jars or with wand applicators (like mascaras and lip glosses) since they are prone to bacterial contamination.

Safer Purchases: Powder-based makeup, beauty tools, balms, and aerosol hair products are generally low-risk. Fragrances are also safer due to their high alcohol content.

Before buying, research how a product should look and feel when new.  Being extra cautious can help you enjoy discount deals without compromising quality or safety.
