Face washing may seem simple, but it’s one of the most debated topics in skincare. Should you do it once a day? After every workout? Or every time your face feels oily? We asked dermatologists and skin care experts, and here’s the deal: the sweet spot is twice a day, once in the morning and again at night.
According to Dr. Lauren Moy, board-certified dermatologist, washing your face removes dirt, oil, makeup, and pollutants that collect on your skin throughout the day and night. “Skipping it allows grime and dead skin cells to build up, leading to breakouts, dullness, and irritation,” she says.
But don’t go overboard. Washing too often—or using harsh products—can strip your skin’s natural oils, leaving it dry, inflamed, and ironically, even oilier.
Morning washing clears away sweat, oil, and any overnight product buildup (yes, even that hair serum that migrated to your cheeks). It also preps your skin to absorb antioxidants and sunscreen better.
Evening washing is non-negotiable. It removes makeup, pollution, sweat, and layers of SPF and serums, giving your skin a clean slate for nighttime products to work their magic.
No matter your skin type, the frequency stays the same, but the cleanser matters.
- If you have dry or sensitive skin, use hydrating creams or oil-based cleansers with ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or niacinamide.
- For acne-prone skin, opt for gentle gel or water-based cleansers, and consider adding a post-workout wash if necessary.
- And for oily skin, don’t overdo it—over-washing can backfire by triggering more oil production.
