That trusty loofah hanging in your shower might be doing more harm than good. Dermatologists are warning against using natural and synthetic loofahs, citing their tendency to trap moisture, dead skin cells, and bacteria, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold and germs.
“Loofahs can cause tiny microtears in the skin and, if not properly cleaned or replaced often, may introduce bacteria or even mold,” explains Dr. Marisa Garshick, board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology. In other words, while they may feel like they’re getting you clean, they could actually be making things worse.
Luckily, there are safer, cleaner alternatives that offer effective exfoliation without the bacterial baggage:
- Silicone scrubbers: These flexible tools use soft bristles to cleanse and exfoliate. They dry quickly, making them less prone to harboring bacteria.
- Washcloths: Gentle and easy to launder after each use, washcloths are a smart option for daily cleansing, especially for sensitive skin.
- Exfoliating gloves: Ideal for scrubbing tougher areas like elbows and knees, these gloves give a deeper exfoliation while remaining easy to rinse and hang dry.
- Dry brushes: Used before you shower, dry brushes help slough off dead skin and boost circulation. Just be sure to clean them regularly.
If your loofah’s been lingering in the shower for weeks, it’s time to rethink your routine. A cleaner alternative could mean healthier skin and fewer hidden germs.
