Mislabeled Breyers Ice Cream Prompts Urgent Allergen Recall: Nut Allergy Warning Issued

A serious packaging mistake has triggered a recall of Breyers Rocky Road Ice Cream, potentially putting people with nut allergies at risk. Unilever Manufacturing, Inc. voluntarily recalled 6,668 cases on June 2, 2025, after discovering that Rocky Road ice cream was accidentally placed into tubs labeled as “Chocolate Truffle.” While the lid correctly reads “Rocky Road,” the side of the tub fails to disclose the presence of almonds, a known allergen, clearly.

On June 10, the FDA classified this as a Class II recall, indicating that consumption could result in temporary or medically reversible health effects, and in some cases, could be life-threatening.

To identify the recalled product, check your freezer for:

  • A 1.5-quart tub labeled as “Chocolate Truffle” but topped with a “Rocky Road” lid

  • Lot Code: JUL1026GB3

  • UPC: 077567457288

The actual contents are Rocky Road—chocolate ice cream with marshmallows and chocolate-covered almonds—despite the tub’s misleading labeling. The container only includes a generic “may contain tree nuts” warning, which fails to meet FDA allergen disclosure requirements when specific nuts are present.

If you or anyone in your household has a nut allergy, do not eat this ice cream. It could cause a severe allergic reaction. Instead, throw it away or return it to the store for a refund or exchange.

Even trusted brands can make dangerous errors. This recall underscores the importance of thoroughly inspecting both lids and labels, particularly when food allergies are a concern. For consumers without allergies, the product is not unsafe, but the mislabeling underscores the need for caution in every kitchen.
