Trump Pulls Plug on Taxpayer Funding for NPR and PBS: A Victory Against Media Bias

On May 1, 2025, President Donald Trump signed a powerful executive order cutting off federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), citing long-standing concerns over taxpayer support of media outlets that, in his words, “no longer serve the American people with fairness or objectivity.”

The order directs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to cease all current and future financial support to NPR and PBS, and tasks federal agencies with identifying and terminating any other indirect funding streams. This move comes after years of public criticism over perceived liberal bias in taxpayer-funded news coverage.

While public broadcasting supporters argue that these outlets provide educational and cultural content, the reality is that both NPR and PBS have increasingly become platforms for partisan narratives and ideological slant, often at odds with conservative viewpoints and traditional American values. For too long, millions of taxpayer dollars have been funneled into institutions that, critics say, fail to represent a balanced perspective.

Federal funding covers about 15% of PBS’s budget and a smaller portion of NPR’s, but many local stations, especially in rural areas, rely more heavily on government support. Still, advocates for the funding cut believe the private market and voluntary donations should drive media sustainability, not forced contributions from taxpayers who may oppose the messaging.

This executive action is part of Trump’s broader agenda to eliminate wasteful government spending and restore trust in American institutions. By ending subsidies to biased outlets, the administration sends a clear message: Media accountability matters.

Taxpayers should not be forced to bankroll content that lacks balance and misrepresents the public it claims to serve. Ending this funding is a step toward greater transparency, neutrality, and respect for diverse viewpoints in American media.
