Federal health officials are warning consumers to immediately discard certain ready-to-eat chicken alfredo products sold at Kroger and Walmart after a deadly listeria outbreak killed three people and caused a pregnancy loss.
The CDC confirmed at least 17 illnesses across 13 states, with 16 hospitalizations. Tragically, deaths have been reported in Illinois, Michigan, and Texas. Cases have also surfaced in Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia.
The outbreak is tied to pre-packaged chicken fettuccine alfredo meals produced by FreshRealm. The company has issued an urgent recall of the following items, which were sold in refrigerated sections:
- Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo (32.8 oz) – Best-by date June 27 or earlier
- Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Broccoli (12.3 oz) – Best-by date June 26 or earlier
- Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettucine Alfredo (12.5 oz) – Best-by date June 19 or earlier
The bacterial strain was first detected during a USDA inspection in March. Although that specific sample was destroyed, contaminated products likely reached store shelves, and the source of the contamination is still unknown.
The CDC warns that the actual number of cases is likely higher and continues to rise. They are actively investigating and urge consumers to check their refrigerators and dispose of or return any recalled products immediately.
Listeria is particularly dangerous for older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, headache, confusion, and even seizures.
If you or someone in your household consumed these products and is feeling unwell, seek medical attention immediately. This outbreak is ongoing, and further contamination is feared.
