Why You Should Never Sit on a Public Toilet Seat

Public toilets are a breeding ground for bacteria, and while it’s unlikely you’ll catch a severe disease just from sitting on a toilet seat, the risks—and the “ick” factor—are still worth avoiding. Here’s why you should think twice before planting yourself on that public porcelain.

First, consider what’s on the surface. Toilet seats in public restrooms often harbor a cocktail of germs, including E. coli, norovirus, streptococcus, and Staphylococcus aureus—the bacteria responsible for staph infections. These microbes can survive on hard surfaces for hours, sometimes even days, especially in busy restrooms with poor ventilation.

Even though your skin acts as a barrier, any minor cut, abrasion, or freshly shaved area makes you more vulnerable to infection. If you touch the seat and then rub your eyes or handle food without washing your hands, you’re inviting those germs to hitch a ride into your body.

Moisture is another issue. A toilet seat that appears dry might have microscopic traces of urine, fecal matter, or menstrual blood. And if it’s visibly wet? Avoid it at all costs. Damp environments increase microbial activity, heightening the risk of exposure.

Beyond germs, there’s hygiene. Public bathrooms see high foot traffic and aren’t always cleaned as often as they should be. Sitting directly on the seat puts you in contact with bacteria from hundreds of other people, many of whom may not have the same hygiene standards as you.

To stay safe, hover or use a toilet seat cover (or even a DIY layer of toilet paper). And always wash your hands thoroughly afterward.

While the risk of contracting a serious illness is low, the combination of bacteria, bodily fluids, and general grime makes one thing clear: it’s best to avoid sitting on a public toilet seat whenever possible.
