Your lips are delicate, sensitive, and constantly exposed to the elements—yet they’re often treated like a testing ground for trendy products and home remedies. While a swipe of lip balm or gloss might seem harmless, what you put on your lips matters more than you think. In fact, some common ingredients and practices can leave your lips dry, damaged, or even infected.
Here are five things you should never put on your lips, no matter how viral or nostalgic they may seem.
Menthol, Camphor, and Eucalyptus: These ingredients are often found in medicated lip balms that promise fast relief. That cool, tingly sensation might feel good at first, but it’s actually a sign of irritation. Over time, menthol and camphor can dry out your lips and trigger inflammation, making chapping worse instead of better.
Cinnamon or Pepper-Based Lip Plumpers: Plumper lips might be trendy, but using products that rely on spicy ingredients like cinnamon oil or capsaicin (from chili peppers) can backfire. These compounds irritate the skin to create swelling, but they can also cause redness, peeling, or even painful blisters. It’s a temporary effect with long-term drawbacks.
Expired Lip Products: If you’ve got old lipsticks or glosses hiding in your drawer, it’s time for a cleanout. Expired cosmetics can harbor bacteria, leading to breakouts, cold sores, or infections. If a product smells odd, looks separated, or you can’t remember when you bought it, toss it.
Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline): While Vaseline creates a barrier, it doesn’t moisturize. In fact, it can trap dryness underneath and make lips feel even drier over time. Instead, opt for nourishing ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, or beeswax that actually hydrate and heal.
Undiluted Essential Oils: Tea tree, peppermint, and lavender oils may smell great, but they’re way too strong for direct application to your lips. These concentrated oils can cause irritation, burning, or allergic reactions. Unless they’re properly diluted in a lip-safe formula, keep them far away from your skin.
For a natural boost of moisture and shine, try dabbing a small amount of extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil on your lips. Both are rich in nourishing properties and create a protective barrier against harsh environmental elements.
