Probiotics Could Prevent Fatal Toxic Shock in Women

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is an extremely serious condition that is caused by toxins produced by particular types of bacteria. Both group A Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus have been implicated. This life threatening condition has been associated mainly with the use of tampons, however, it can affect people of all genders and ages.

TSS Symptoms

People afflicted with TSS experience a progressive decline in blood pressure, confusion and dizziness, peeling of the skin and occasionally seizures and death as a result of harmful bacterial toxins, Tampons, especially those left in place for a long period of time, create a perfect breeding ground for the toxins. TSS can also occur as a result of surgery complications or skin infections.

Bacterial Balance

Creating a healthy balance of bacteria could save your life, according to researchers. A recent study out of The University of Western Ontario has discovered that certain strains of lactobacillus bacteria are able to hinder the production of the dangerous toxins responsible for TSS. According to researchers the pH and the type and number of bacteria present in the vagina may serve as an indication of whether or not the Staphylococcus aureus strains will produce fatal toxic shock syndrome.

Probiotics Could Prevent Fatal Toxic Shock in Women

The results of this research indicate that a better diagnostic tool is needed to assess the health of the microflora in the vagina and that more emphasis should be placed on probiotics to reduce the risk of infections and increase vaginal health. The current system of culturing is ineffective, according to researchers and is not able to properly assess the  risk of infections. Broad spectrum antibiotics do not neutralize toxins in the vagina and should be replaced by practices that focus on creating healthy bacteria, such as the use of probiotics.

To improve your healthy bacteria counts, eat foods rich in probiotics such as kale, garlic, seaweed, blueberries, parsley, beets and cranberries, kefir, miso and sauerkraut. You can also take a high quality probiotic supplement such as ProX10. Improving the bacterial balance in your body will not only keep you safe from TSS but also from a host of other compromising health conditions.
