Stop and Say Wow: How Everyday Awe Can Fight Depression and Stress

Feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or stuck in a fog? Science says the answer might be simpler—and more beautiful—than you think. According to new research from Yale University, taking just a few moments each day to feel awe can significantly improve your mental health.

This isn’t about chasing waterfalls or hiking Himalayan peaks. The study found that pausing to admire the delicate veins on a leaf, marvel at a city skyline, or lose yourself in a mind-bending podcast can be enough to shift your mood and mindset.

Researchers followed 68 people suffering from long COVID, many dealing with fatigue, brain fog, and emotional strain. One group went about their lives as usual. The other was invited to pause daily to notice something amazing. That’s it. No meditation apps, no gratitude journals—just moments of genuine wonder.

After four weeks, the awe-focused group saw impressive changes:

  • 17% decrease in depression

  • 12% drop in stress

  • 16% boost in overall wellbeing

Lead researcher Maria Monroy summed it up: “Our work shows that finding moments of awe in everyday life can improve depressive symptoms and overall wellbeing.”

It turns out that awe isn’t just poetic; it’s medicinal. Previous studies have linked it to everything from better heart health to increased generosity. This latest study, published in Scientific Reports, adds mental health to the list.

So next time you step outside, take a breath, look up, and notice. Awe is everywhere.
