Stop using these products immediately! Federal health officials have issued an urgent nationwide recall for several over-the-counter cold and teething remedies amid fears they may be contaminated with a fungus capable of causing fatal brain infections.
The FDA warns consumers to discard the following products immediately:
- Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs (Lot #732216301205, #732216301656)
- Zicam Nasal AllClear Swabs
- Orajel Baby Teething Swabs (Lot #310310400002)
According to the manufacturer, Church & Dwight Co., the cotton tips on these products may harbor fungal contamination. If inserted into the nose or mouth, the fungus can enter the bloodstream and potentially migrate to the brain, especially in children, infants, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The result? A fast-moving infection that can lead to sepsis, organ failure, and death.
The swabs were distributed across the United States and Puerto Rico, and although no illnesses have been reported yet, the risk is severe. Because these swabs are used inside delicate nasal and oral tissue, the risk of the fungus entering the bloodstream is high, especially in users experiencing nasal inflammation from colds or teething discomfort.
Do not take chances. The FDA urges everyone in possession of these products to stop use immediately and contact the manufacturer for a full refund. Though other Zicam and Orajel products remain safe, these specific lots pose a critical health threat.
If you or your child experiences fever, chills, or extreme fatigue after using this product, seek medical attention immediately.
This is a life-threatening public health alert. Act now.
