Walmart is pulling nearly 850,000 popular Ozark Trail water bottles off shelves after a serious safety hazard left two people with permanent vision loss. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the massive recall this week, warning customers that the 64-ounce stainless steel bottles pose a hidden danger.
The problem? If you store food, juice, milk, or carbonated drinks in these bottles, gas pressure can build up inside, causing the lid to become a projectile when opened. The force can be so powerful that it has caused severe eye injuries, with two unlucky customers losing sight in one eye.
The bottles, sold for about $15 each, were available at Walmart stores nationwide. They’re easy to spot: stainless steel silver with a black screw-on lid and the Ozark Trail logo on the side. There’s no model number on the bottle, so customers should double-check any 64-ounce Ozark Trail bottles they own.
The CPSC urges anyone with one of these bottles to stop using it immediately. Walmart is offering full refunds to anyone who returns the recalled product.
This isn’t the first time a seemingly harmless water bottle has caused big trouble. When pressurized liquids build up in sealed containers, they can create dangerous explosions that few people expect, turning an everyday hydration bottle into a serious hazard.
If you have this Ozark Trail bottle in your backpack, car, or fridge, don’t risk it. Check Walmart’s recall instructions and get your refund to stay safe.
