Cracker Barrel is returning to its roots after a brief logo redesign sparked controversy, political commentary, and a market rollercoaster.
The Southern-themed restaurant chain announced Wednesday that it will abandon its updated, minimalist logo and restore its longtime “Old Timer” design—complete with the familiar Uncle Herschel character. “We thank our guests for sharing your voices and love for Cracker Barrel. We said we would listen, and we have,” the company wrote in a social media post.
The reversal came after President Trump criticized the change, calling on the company to “admit a mistake based on customer response (the ultimate poll).” Following his comments on Truth Social, shares of Cracker Barrel spiked—climbing more than 6% Tuesday and rising another 4% in premarket trading on Wednesday. Trump praised the company’s move, framing it as a billion-dollar publicity opportunity if “played right.”
The redesign, unveiled just last week, had stripped away the Old Timer from Cracker Barrel’s logo in favor of a cleaner, modern look. The shift drew immediate backlash from loyal customers and critics online, fueling a 14% stock slide before the reversal.
Adding fuel to the debate, Trump Jr. and political allies highlighted Cracker Barrel’s leadership and LGBTQ+ employee initiatives as part of broader culture-war criticism.
Business experts note that while rebranding always risks alienating loyal audiences, the company’s quick pivot underscores the power of consumer sentiment. “You can’t target and reach everybody,” said Marcus Collins, a business professor at the University of Michigan.
Despite the turmoil, Cracker Barrel stock is still up nearly 40% over the past year. CEO Julie Felss Masino has emphasized that the brand remains committed to delivering “country hospitality and value” even as it navigates changing tastes—and, now, a high-profile logo whiplash.
