Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the spirit of celebration, but the next day may leave you feeling like you have one foot in the grave. While drinking in excess is certainly not a healthy choice, we’ve all had nights where we imbibe one or two too many glasses of vino.
Take heart, these natural hangover remedies will have you back to normal in no time.
Grab a bunch of bananas
It is no secret that bananas are packed with potassium. It just so happens that a night on the town will leave your body depleted of much-needed potassium, which contributes to the sickly, hungover feeling. Eating a banana before you go to sleep will help start the healing sooner.
The next morning when you’re under the weather, eat another banana, or better yet, blend it into a smoothie with some organic milk and raw honey.
Have a hot soak
The body’s own natural detoxification processes are very good at purging as much as a third of the waste from the body. This is why you can literally smell the alcohol on someone who has overly imbibed. Taking a hot soak in a tub, or enjoying a long, hot shower, can help speed up this process.
Adding a spoonful of wasabi powder (Japanese horseradish) to the water can increase the detoxification benefits even more.
Turn to tomatoes
It is debatable if a hair of the dog will cure your hangover, but having some tomatoes will likely help heal your day-after-blues. Besides containing natural fructose, which helps with metabolizing the alcohol in your system, they also replenish minerals, vitamins and enzymes that you lose by drinking.
Combine a glass of freshly-squeezed tomato juice with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper and ½ teaspoon of fresh lime juice to make a tasty, powerful healing concoction.
Hydrate with H2O
Since we know that alcohol draws fluids out of the body, it is common sense to replace all the lost hydration with some good, fresh water. Try drinking a glass of water for each alcoholic drink you imbibe. This may stave off a hangover altogether.
If not, be sure to drink a couple glasses first thing in the morning. Adding a pinch of ground, unprocessed sea salt salt to a glass of water can help replace some of the lost electrolytes in your system as well.
Take a mustard bath
Mustard is known to have good detoxification properties. It is linked to increasing circulation and purging toxins out of the organs. Once toxins have been flushed from the organs, they are naturally refilled with clean blood.
You can make your own mustard bath by adding two tablespoons of mustard to your warm bath water while filling the tub. Soak in the bath for approximately 20 minutes, then dry off and rest.
Use a little reflexology
According to the principles of reflexology, you can help ease aches and speed up the detoxification process by rubbing the outer edge of your right foot. Start massaging halfway between your little toe and the middle of your foot. This area is thought to stimulate the liver and increase the purge of toxins.
Detox with wheatgrass
One of the best natural detoxifiers is wheatgrass, as it cleanses the water and blood in the body. The chlorophyll contained in wheatgrass helps maintain pH balance, enhances wound healing, naturally deodorizes the body, and supplies enzymes and antioxidants that support body systems.
