You might think scrolling Instagram on the toilet is harmless, but according to a gastroenterologist, that common habit could be setting you up for a painful problem: hemorrhoids.
Dr. Joseph Salhab, D.O., recently took to social media to call out the surprising link between prolonged toilet time and hemorrhoid risk. “Sitting too long while trying to go, especially while distracted on your phone, increases pressure on rectal veins, which can lead to hemorrhoids that bleed and hurt,” he warns.
And it’s not just your backside that’s at risk. Using your phone on the toilet can also spread bathroom bacteria straight to your device. Gross.
So, what should you do instead? First, put down your phone and rethink your routine. If you’re spending ages waiting to go, Dr. Salhab suggests a few natural ways to get things moving:
- Up your fiber intake: Load up on fruits like kiwi, apples, pears, prunes, and dragon fruit. Not only do they help bulk and soften your stool, but their natural vitamin C can support healthy digestion.
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Water is essential for regularity. Dehydration makes stools increasingly difficult to pass.
- Change your posture: Use a toilet stool like a Squatty Potty to align your body and make pooping easier.
- Consider supplements: Magnesium citrate or a fiber drink can offer gentle relief if you’re backed up.
And most importantly? Go when you need to go. Holding it in or pushing too hard are both big hemorrhoid triggers.
If symptoms persist or you’re in pain, don’t tough it out — see a doctor. A high-fiber diet can be beneficial, but chronic issues may require medical attention.
Your bathroom habits matter more than you think. Make them healthy — and hemorrhoid-free.
